In the report ‘Ready for Change? Global goals at home and abroad’, which has been published today, Wemos calls for a national Global Health Strategy. The report will be presented to Dutch minister Ploumen at the international conference ‘Ready for Change?’ at NEMO in Amsterdam. Together with 39 other civil society organizations, Wemos did research on national, European and international policy in the areas of food security, climate change, migration, tax and health.
The report’s central message is clear: the current efforts of the Dutch government and the European Union are not sufficient if we want to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With this report, the organizations want to provide Dutch and European policymakers the right perspective for ways to tackle this issue, so that the goals can be met.
In the chapter ‘Global health starts at home’, Linda Mans and Corinne Hinlopen of Wemos touch upon the topic of health with partner organizations MCNV, Rutgers WPF and Stop Aids Now!. Together they call upon the need for the development of a national Global Health Strategy. Policymakers can develop a coherent global health policy when national policy is linked to global health challenges. And although the Netherlands and the European Union have achieved positive results when it comes to global health (like in the case of the Ebola outbreak), different ministries should collaborate more.
