Communication awards: two special mentions for Wemos

7/11/2024 - News

Wemos has received two special mentions at the Humanitarian Communication Awards 2024. One together with our partners in the Make Way programme for a video and toolkit on sexual and reproductive health and rights, and one for our campaign video on Monopoly, the Medicine Edition, in which we call for fair medicine prices.

Video and toolkit Make Way

Make Way’s video and toolkit focus on how to use an intersectional approach to ensure that everyone – including marginalized groups – can realize and promote their sexual and reproductive health and rights.

The materials were jointly developed by the Make Way partners: Akina Mama wa Afrika (Uganda), the Circle of Concerned African Women Theologians (Kenya), Forum for African Women Educationalists (Kenya), Liliane Fonds (Netherlands), VSO Nederland (Netherlands) and Wemos (Netherlands). The Make Way programme is supported by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Video Monopoly, the Medicine Edition

In our Dutch campaign video for fair medicine prices, the (fictional) pharmaceutical company Katjing Farma presents the game Monopoly, the Medicine Edition. It makes it clear that better rules are needed to ensure access to affordable medicines for everyone. The video was made by the Dutch comedian Roel Maalderink.

The jury says about the video: “In addition, a special mention for Wemos, which now regularly appears on our ‘high-flyer’ radar with sharp videos in which they criticize the power of large companies. This time they tackle ‘big capital’ very literally, with ‘Monopoly, the Medicine Edition’, in which the pharmaceutical industry is called to order with a fictional commercial for the iconic game: ‘become the ultimate pill king, and divert all the risk to society.’ Sharp.”

Humanitarian Communication Awards

The Humanitarian Communication Awards is an annual initiative of the Expertise Centre Humanitarian Communication to highlight campaigns of Dutch international cooperation organizations. The special mentions for the Make Way materials and the Monopoly video fall under the ‘High-flyer’ category for best campaigns.

In 2023 we received a special mention for a video about financing health systems. In 2022 we were nominated for a video on sharing patents and knowledge for global access to Covid-19 vaccines.
