Myria Koutsoumpa
Global health advocate
“Every person has the indisputable right to live a healthy life, as well as to decide about matters that affect their life. During my time as a dentist I learned how as a clinician you can contribute to improving the health of your patients, at the individual level. And this is very valuable. However, you can have a deep impact on the lives of whole populations by influencing and changing national and international economic and health policies. This is what I strive for with my work as a Global Health Advocate at Wemos. We need collective and co-operative effort to make the world a better place. And effort is like toothpaste: you can always squeeze out a bit more!”
As a global health advocate, Myria conducts research on macroeconomics and financing for health, and financing for human resources for health in particular.
Before joining Wemos, Myria worked as a clinician in public hospitals and private practices in Greece and the National Health Service in Scotland. She holds a master’s degree in Global Health from Maastricht University, where she specialized in global health policy, economics and management. For her master thesis, she focused on fiscal space for human resources for health in Uganda. Before undertaking her studies in global health, Myria studied dentistry at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in Greece, and completed an exchange programme at the University of Turku in Finland.
