Thomas van der Akker
Professor of global maternal health, Vrije Universiteit, obstetrician gynaecologist Leiden University Medical Center
Thomas van den Akker works as Professor of Global Maternal Health at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and as an obstetrician gynaecologist at the Leiden University Medical Center. He previously worked in Malawi for four years as a physician specialised in international health and tropical medicine. He also worked for Médecins Sans Frontières for a number of years. Van den Akker studied Medicine at Leiden University. In 2012, he obtained his PhD with his thesis “Medical mirrors: maternal care in a Malawian district” at the Vrije University Amsterdam. Since then he has been involved as a researcher and (co)promotor in reproductive health care projects in many different countries, especially in southern Africa. His area of focus within our supervisory board is global health.
