Privacy statement
1. Introduction
This is the privacy statement of the Wemos Foundation. Here we explain how we handle your personal data. When processing your personal data, we comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) and the ensuing laws and regulations.
2. What personal data can we process about you?
Wemos may process the following personal data:
- salutation (title, gender)
- contact/name and address details, telephone number and e-mail address
- date of birth
- payment details (bank account number)
- information about which device you have used to visit our website, such as an IP address
- your surfing behaviour on the website
- the operating system, browser type, and Internet service provider you use
- the internet address of the website used to redirect you to the Wemos website
- other data sent to Wemos, such as a motivation letter and CV in case of a job application, or company details and your position in case you donate on behalf of a company.
3. Why do we process your personal data?
Wemos processes your personal data for the following purposes:
- to process and manage your donation
- to inform you about new campaigns
- to optimize our services and to spread our message further
- to comply with a legal obligation imposed on our foundation
- to exercise internal and external control over our services
- to verify your identity (this is necessary, for example, if you submit a request to change your personal data)
- to contact you in relation to newsletters
- to adapt and improve the website
- to contact you and respond to questions you asked or complaints you logged
- to go over the application process with you.
By providing your personal data and by agreeing to the privacy statement, you consent to the processing of personal data regarding the above purposes.
4. We use your data on these grounds
Wemos processes your personal data based on the following principles:
- you have given Wemos explicit permission for the processing
- the processing is necessary for entering into or executing an agreement to which you are a party
- Wemos has a legitimate interest in the processing.
Wemos has the following legitimate interests:
- to be able to (continue to) provide and improve our services
- to enable proper functioning and improvement of our website
- to improve the security of our IT environment
- to go over the application process
5. Sharing with third parties
Wemos may engage third parties that process personal data on behalf of Wemos. These may include:
- website builders
- contractors/suppliers, including IT-service providers. Wemos makes agreements with these parties about – among other things – the security of the personal data that are processed.
6. Security
Wemos continuously takes structural measures to optimally protect your personal data against unlawful use. Wemos ensures that all its user settings, programs and services are set up from the beginning of development in such a way that your privacy protection is maximised. Where possible, Wemos continuously takes privacy-enhancing (security) measures.
7. Retention periods
Our aim is to destroy personal data as soon as we no longer need these to achieve our goals. Some data are stored for the purpose of a financial and/or tax obligation. In that case, your data will be stored for seven years. At the end of this period, we will carefully delete your personal data.
8. Your rights
If your personal data is processed, you have several rights, which are set out below. You can exercise these rights by submitting a written request to Wemos or by sending an e-mail to: service@wemos.nl.
An employee of Wemos will then respond to your request as soon as possible, but in any case, within a week, in principle by e-mail. If you submit a request to change your personal data, we will first assess whether we can process your request. For example, we cannot do this if we cannot establish your identity. In that case, we cannot assess whether you are entitled to request making the change.
- Access and/or change personal data
You can ask us at any time which (categories of) personal data Wemos processes about you, for what purposes this is done, which source the personal data comes from and which retention periods are used. In addition, you can contact us at any time to supplement, correct or delete your personal data.
- Withdrawal of consent
You can easily withdraw the consent to process your personal data at any time by sending an email to service@wemos.nl.
- Right to transfer personal data
You can request the personal data that Wemos stores about you via service@wemos.nl. After receiving the personal data, you are free to share your personal data with third parties.
- Right to have your personal data deleted
If you no longer wish to use the services of Wemos, you can submit a request for the deletion of all your personal data. This can be done via: service@wemos.nl.
- Right to object
You have the right to object to the processing of your personal data by Wemos based on the principles ‘legitimate interest of Wemos’. If Wemos bases itself on these principles, Wemos will weigh the different interests regarding your privacy. The right to object gives you the opportunity to require Wemos to make the balance of interests once more.
- Right to lodge a complaint or initiate legal proceedings
You always have the possibility to file a complaint about the use of personal data by Wemos in general, both to Wemos and to the Dutch Data Protection Authority. The contact details of the Dutch Data Protection Authority can be found here.
9. Cookie statement
We use functional, analytical, and advertising cookies on our website(s). The following explains per category what these mean and what we use this information for:
- Functional cookies are used to optimize the operation of our website(s). For example, they are used for the correct functioning of forms on our website(s).
- Analytical cookies are used by Wemos to test and optimize the quality and effectiveness of the website(s).
- Advertising cookies make it possible to display certain advertisements related to our campaigns.
- Social media cookies enable useful extras. This concerns, for example, the Facebook ‘like’ button or the possibility to share something via Twitter. Through these cookies, the website you are viewing ‘knows’ whether you are logged in to Google, Facebook, or Twitter.
How long do the cookies remain on my computer, tablet, or phone?
Functional cookies are deleted after your visit to our website(s). Analytical and advertising cookies are not automatically deleted. If you so wish, you can delete these cookies yourself. To do so, you go to https://wemos.org. The cookie pop-up appears at the bottom of the page. If you click on ‘settings’, you can view the cookies and disable them if necessary.

11. Changes and applicable law
Wemos reserves the right to amend this privacy statement. We ensure that the most recent version is always available on our website. None of the provisions of this privacy statement are intended to create any obligation or agreement between Wemos and you as a data subject. The provisions of this privacy statement and all disputes arising from it are governed by Dutch law.
12. Social media and user-generated content
Our social media (including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram) allow users to post their own content. Please note that content you send to Wemos via social media may be viewed by the public and caution should be exercised when providing personal data via social media platforms. We are not responsible for the actions of other persons if you post personal data on one of our social media platforms. Please also refer to the privacy and cookie policies of the social media platforms you use.
